In preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), the Malaysian government is undertaking efforts to transform Chinese new villages into vibrant tourism hotspots.
These historically rich communities, known for their unique culture and traditions, will soon serve as attractions for both local and international tourists.
Tourism To Boost Local Economy
According to Malaysian Chinese New Village Secretariat chairman Khoo Poay Tiong, there are 613 Chinese new villages across the nation, each with its own distinct narrative, arts, and cultural offerings. Khoo, who also serves as the Kota Melaka MP, emphasized that the Madani government is committed to upgrading infrastructure in these villages to position them as key tourism destinations. “The goal is not only to preserve the history and culture of these villages but also to stimulate the local economy,” Khoo said. “Tourism will provide residents with opportunities to increase their income while showcasing the vibrant heritage of these communities.”
Modernizing Villages, Preserving Tradition
With allocations from the Housing and Local Government Ministry, ongoing upgrades to facilities in these villages aim to improve accessibility and visitor experience. From roads to community centers, these enhancements are set to modernize the villages while maintaining their traditional charm.
Building Pride and Community Spirit
Additionally, initiatives like the nationwide Chinese New Year village decoration competition have already begun to shine a spotlight on these cultural enclaves. These efforts aim to encourage active participation from local residents, fostering a sense of pride and community spirit while attracting early attention from tourists.
Preserving Heritage, Boosting Tourism
The revitalization of Chinese new villages aligns with the broader goals of VM2026, which aims to draw 35.6 million international visitors and generate RM147.1 billion in tourism revenue. By turning these villages into vibrant tourism products, Malaysia not only preserves a significant part of its heritage but also strengthens its appeal as a global cultural destination.
As these villages prepare to open their doors to the world, they stand as a testament to Malaysia’s commitment to promoting inclusivity, cultural heritage, and economic growth.
