Transport Minister Anthony Loke has defended the 10 per cent surcharge on express bus fares during festive seasons, stating it is necessary to consider factors such as increased service capacity and bus hire expenses. Loke emphasized that without the surcharge, bus companies would struggle to meet the heightened demand for services, potentially leading to reduced capacity and inadequate compensation for bus drivers. He noted that this surcharge has been a longstanding practice for the past two decades, typically applied a week before and after the festival day.

Addressing public dissatisfaction over the fare increase, Loke highlighted the importance of maintaining service levels during peak periods. The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) announced the 10 per cent fare hike for economy service category buses during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration from April 4 to 17. This decision, approved by the Cabinet, includes a festive season surcharge of RM0.009 per kilometer, raising the express bus fare in this category to RM0.102 per km from the normal rate of RM0.093 per km.

Loke assured the public that complaints regarding unreasonable fares could be lodged with APAD for investigation and action. Additionally, he announced restrictions on heavy vehicles on the road two days before and after Hari Raya Aidilfitri (April 8, 9, 12, and 13), with further details to be provided later.

In conclusion, while acknowledging concerns about fare increases, Loke stressed the necessity of the surcharge to maintain service quality and ensure fair compensation for bus operators and drivers during peak travel periods. He urged the public to report any instances of exorbitant fares to APAD for appropriate action. Furthermore, with the impending festive season, measures such as restrictions on heavy vehicles aim to enhance road safety and facilitate smoother travel experiences for all road users.

As travelers prepare for the festive season, it is crucial to recognize the efforts undertaken by authorities to manage transportation services efficiently, ensuring accessibility and safety for all commuters.
