SABAH FC only played to a goalless draw against Kelantan The Real Warriors FC in the Super League tie at Likas Stadium, Saturday night.

I saw a much weaker Sabah FC on the field without Stuart Wilkin and Miguel Cifiuentes in the team. I understand that they were ruled out with injury while new import Dean Pelekanos was also not available to serve out the red card suspension.

Sabah FC had a tough time operating from the middle in the absence of Stuart and Cifuentes, even though Daniel Ting was moved to midfield to partner Gary Steven Robbat and defender Dinesh Rajasingam was also brought in to start the match.

If this is any indication, the reserve list apparently does not have the depth especially in the engine room.

Assistant head coach Alto Linus had come out to describe that the result was fair due to the weakened squad. In all fairness, I may agree with him that the draw was a good result, but I thought we had created enough chances to score and win the three points outright.

The performance Saturday night reminded me of last season where we were always not making use of our scoring opportunities that came along and always fired blank.

The team’s energy up front with the inclusion of Fergus Tierney has certainly improved but it is not enough as we really need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Gabriel Peres had three golden opportunities on the night but his headers did not hit the target, especially the one in the second half right in front of the goal.

In the end, it was not the result we expected as we missed to take home the three points that we truly deserved.

Even Kelantan The Real Warriors FC’s head coach  E. Elavarasan admitted that Sabah FC were superior in the encounter.

We need to put the disappointment behind in preparation for the next game. It is no use crying over spilled milk. More work is needed by the coaches to improve the players’ finishing.

Sabah FC are currently in eighth position after two games in this season’s Super League competition with two draws in the opening two matches following the 1-1 away draw a week earlier against Kuala Lumpur City FC.

Our next game is against Melaka FC this Friday here at Likas Stadium again. It is a rescheduled match and we need to win at all costs.

Let’s hope we will have a fully fit squad with all the injured players recovered on time to get our first victory of the season in front of the home supporters.
