Various consumer associations have emphasized the need for strict enforcement of the drop in imported white rice prices, effective today, to ensure the government's objective of making the country's staple food affordable for Malaysians is realized. T Saravanan, CEO of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca), stressed the importance of vigilance among relevant authorities, particularly those responsible for border controls, to prevent any exploitation of the price reduction. Meanwhile, Md Salleh Sadijo, president of the Johor State Consumer Movement Association, lauded the government's initiative as a demonstration of understanding towards Malaysians' financial challenges.
Expressing concerns over potential price manipulation, Saravanan highlighted the significant disparity between international rice prices, currently exceeding RM38, and the adjusted prices domestically. He warned against opportunistic practices such as repackaging and smuggling across borders, urging constant monitoring of sellers and prudent purchasing behavior among consumers, as advised by Datuk Seri Jacob George, president of the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (Cassa). George emphasized the importance of moderation in purchasing, particularly among those with greater buying power, to avoid adverse impacts on middle and lower-income groups.
Academicians also weighed in on the matter, welcoming the price reduction as a relief for Malaysians grappling with financial strains. Assoc Prof Zainizam Zakaria, Head of the Economics Department at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), anticipated corresponding reductions in prices of rice-based products by businesses, contingent upon adjustments in procurement costs. Dr. Muhammad Iqmal Hisham Kamaruddin, deputy director of the Centre for Community Engagement and Industry Networking at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), underscored the ongoing need for rice imports alongside efforts to optimize domestic production for long-term sustainability.
The reduction in rice prices has elicited positive responses from ordinary Malaysians like retiree Abdul Rahman Ahmed, who anticipates relief in managing his family's weekly rice consumption. Similarly, housewife Haryati Mamat from Sabak Bernam, Selangor, hailed the timely reduction, particularly with the approach of Ramadan and the upcoming Aidilfitri festivities, during which rice holds significant cultural importance.
The announced price reduction, ranging from RM2 to RM3, comes following deliberations during the National Action Council on Cost of Living meeting, as revealed by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. With strict enforcement and responsible consumer behavior, the reduced prices aim to alleviate financial burdens and ensure continued access to this essential dietary staple for all Malaysians.
