Rafizi Ramli, the Minister of Economic Affairs said the government is considering a two-price system for the fuel price so that 15% of the rich (T15) can pay the market rate for RON95 petrol while the rest follow the current subsidized price.
Pakatan Harapan’s Hassan Karim told Parliament that he is on board with the tabling of Budget 2025 last week but there is just one thing that, to him, could be better.
“I’m concerned that if targeted subsidies of RON95 is implemented, we will only be the government for one term.”
“The rich don’t use RON95 or RON97”
Hassan then continued to tell Parliament what he believes – that the rich don’t use RON95 or RON97 petrol but they use electric vehicles (EVs).
“They are using EVs today. So, why are we mistreating the rich with the targeted subsidies?”
Hassan also said that he was worried about the unity government being short-lived, adding that he’s a fan of PMX and hopes to see the same government win in the coming election.
The petrol subsidy for RON95 will be cut by RM8 billion for the T15 group (combined household income of RM13,000) while the price of RM2.05 per litre will remain for 85% of the population.
During the tabling of Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the savings achieved will be utilised for the welfare of the general public.
He also emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining subsidies for the majority of the population, as implemented in the targeting of electricity subsidies, where 85 per cent of the people are unaffected.
