Richard E Grant throws star-studded party after dropping friends over wife’s death

Richard E Grant has shed some light on who remains in his friendship circle after admitting some people were “edited out” of his life over their handling of his wife’s death.

Joan Washington, the wife of the Withnail and I actor, died in September 2021 aged 74 following a stage four lung cancer diagnosis.

In a recent interview, Grant revealed that he unfriended people who had avoided him in the wake of her death, adding that would never forgive those who kept their distance during that tough time.

“There are people that have been edited out of my life and I will never see them again,” he said in an interview with The Times. “If I had done that to them, I wouldn’t be able to look them in the face.”

Just days after the interview, Grant made it clear which of his celebrity pals were there for him by sharing a photo of the guests at a recent party he hosted.

Posting on Monday (24 August), Grant wrote on Instagram: “It’s my party & I’ll cry if I want to,” alongside a snap of a dinner party at his London home.

Sitting next to the actor are his daughter Olivia Grant, Chicago’s Christine Baranski, comedian Steve Martin, his wife Anne Stringfield, Slow Horses’ Sir Gary Oldman and his wife Gisele Schmidt.

Also at the table are Harry Potter star Helena Bonham Carter, comedian Martin Short and his son Henry, with Grant also sharing in the caption that the photo was taken by his son-in-law Florian Herbst.

In the interview with The Times, Grant revealed that he is a “very unequivocal, black and white” person.

“I’ve tried to go for the grey areas but it’s not succeeded for very long,” he said, noting that when some of his friends failed to get in touch in the aftermath of his wife’s death, it was “portcullis down”.

Grant is set to compete on the forthcoming series of Celebrity Traitors, which has already been filmed. He entered the castle alongside fellow contestants Michael Sheen, Jerry Hall, and Maya Jama.

Teasing the new series earlier in the summer, Grant said that he called series one star Celia Imrie for advice.

“I called her, because we’ve known each other for 40 years. And I said, ‘Celia, what is the thing that you can’t be prepared for?’” he said on The One Show in June.

“She said, ‘the cruelty of people who you instinctively want to trust, in a room like this where suddenly every single person suspects you.’ I think that’s a very accurate thing to have said.”
