MANILA, Philippines — If there is one thing the prosecution team agrees with Vice President Sara Duterte on, it is to have a speedy conclusion to the ongoing impeachment proceedings.
“The Vice President and the House prosecution panel share the same desire for a speedy trial of the case before the Senate impeachment court,” prosecutor and Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon said in Filipino in a text message to reporters.
The lawmaker was reacting to the vice president’s earlier statement of wanting a speedy process in her impeachment trial, stressing that the speedy disposition of cases is enshrined in the Constitution.
Duterte, however, did not commit to start attending the hearings and argued that she is “fully represented” by her defense team.
Ridon, on the other hand, reiterated that the prosecution side would continue to strategize to efficiently and effectively present their case and bag a favorable outcome.
“Consequently, the prosecution will strive to present all evidence and witnesses at the earliest possible time, enabling the defense to subsequently present its own evidence and witnesses, and ultimately allowing the court to render a verdict,” the lawmaker said.
The impeachment trial of the vice president has been cancelled for two days due to bad weather.
