Kota Kinabalu: A riot appears to have broken out in Tenom, Sabah with the federal reserve unit (FRU) deployed according to clips going viral on social media.
One clip showed that a tear gas canister had been launched into a crowd, who were carrying flags bearing the Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) logo.
Details are scant on the incident. FMT has reached out to authorities and KDM leaders for more details.
FMT has learned that the riot occurred outside the Tenom nomination centre, where KDM president Peter Anthony was to submit his nomination papers.
It is understood that Peter’s nomination was rejected by the Election Commission (EC) because of his court conviction. This prompted the crowd to attempt to force their way into the nomination centre.
Peter had been jailed for five years and fined RM50,000 in May, and is still appealing the case.
It is understood that Peter is still in the nomination centre with his lawyers to object to the rejection.
FMT has reached out to the EC for comment.
