Chandratal Lake, one of the most picturesque tourist destinations in the high-altitude desert of Lahaul and Spiti, is witnessing a massive influx of visitors this summer season. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks and vast alpine meadows, the lake continues to attract nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts and photographers from across the country.
Located about 120 km from Manali, Chandratal has emerged as a preferred destination for travellers seeking pristine landscapes and a unique camping experience. While some tourists visit the lake on a day trip from Manali, many prefer to spend a night at nearby campsites, enjoying the tranquillity of the region and its star-studded skies.
The growing popularity of the lake has resulted in a significant increase in tourist footfall. The crystal-clear waters of Chandratal, set against a backdrop of snow-clad mountains, continue to leave visitors mesmerised and have made it one of Himachal’s most sought-after summer destinations.
However, the surge in tourism has also highlighted persistent infrastructure challenges. Visitors have raised concerns over the poor condition of the road leading to the lake, which remains rough and difficult to navigate in several stretches.
Chuyachandan, a tourist from Kolkata, said the journey to Chandratal was physically demanding because of the deteriorated road condition.
“The road is in a deplorable state and travelling on it can be quite exhausting. But once you reach the lake and witness its beauty, all the hardship is forgotten,” he said.
Heavy tourist traffic has also led to frequent congestion on the narrow mountain road approaching the lake, particularly during peak travel hours.
Another major concern is the absence of reliable mobile connectivity in the area. Tourists often find it difficult to contact family members or seek assistance during emergencies, underscoring the need for improved communication infrastructure.
Local tourism stakeholders and visitors have urged authorities to strengthen mobile network coverage and upgrade road infrastructure to ensure a safer and more comfortable travel experience.
They believe that better facilities would not only improve visitor convenience but also further boost tourism in the region. Following the popularity of destinations such as Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass, Chandratal has emerged as a major attraction in the state, drawing thousands of visitors every season.
With tourist numbers continuing to rise, stakeholders say balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation will be crucial to preserving the fragile ecosystem and unique charm of the iconic Himalayan lake.
