Riyadh Air has officially commenced its inaugural nonstop service between Riyadh and Kuala Lumpur, making the Malaysian capital the airline’s first destination in Southeast Asia as it continues to expand its international footprint.
The new route, which began operations on 30 July, operates three times weekly using the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, strengthening air connectivity between Saudi Arabia and Malaysia while positioning Kuala Lumpur as a key gateway into the ASEAN region.

The inaugural flight was celebrated at both King Khalid International Airport (RUH) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The welcoming ceremony at KLIA was attended by H.E. Osamah Dakhel Al-Ahmadi, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Malaysia; Dato’ Seri Jana Muniayan, Secretary-General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport; Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports; Vincent Coste, Chief Commercial Officer of Riyadh Air; alongside senior government and airport officials.
With the launch, Riyadh Air becomes the ninth Middle Eastern airline to serve Kuala Lumpur International Airport, further reinforcing KLIA’s position as a major aviation hub connecting Southeast Asia with the Middle East.

“This route is far more than a direct connection between two capital cities; it builds a vital bridge between Saudi Arabia and the broader ASEAN region,” said Tony Douglas, Chief Executive Officer of Riyadh Air.
He added that the new service supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by facilitating business, tourism, education and cultural exchanges while offering guests a digitally focused travel experience.
Malaysia Airports Managing Director Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani described Riyadh Air’s decision to select Kuala Lumpur as its first Southeast Asian destination as a significant milestone for both KLIA and Malaysia.
“As the ninth Middle Eastern airline to serve KLIA, its entry further strengthens our connectivity with a region that is becoming increasingly important for tourism, trade and investment,” he said.
Beyond improving connectivity between the two capitals, the new service is expected to support growing demand for tourism, business, education, trade and religious travel, particularly among Malaysian Umrah and Hajj pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia while providing Saudi travellers easier access to Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian region.
The route was launched in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Air Connectivity Program (ACP), an initiative supporting the Kingdom’s National Tourism and Aviation Strategies aimed at positioning Riyadh as a leading global aviation hub.
