KUALA LUMPUR – The 6.4-kilometre New Pantai Expressway Extension (NPE 2), linking Bangsar and Pantai Dalam, is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the area by up to 40 per cent once completed.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the RM1.7 billion project is fully financed by New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE), a wholly-owned subsidiary of IJM Corporation Berhad, without any additional allocation or financial commitment from the government.

“The NPE 2 project reflects the government’s commitment to providing modern, sustainable, and people-centred infrastructure. This is not merely a physical development but a symbol of our dedication to the people’s well-being and our ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure network,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Nanta added that the project demonstrates the success of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model as a catalyst for strategic infrastructure development that is inclusive, sustainable, and forward-looking, which is aligned with the Malaysia MADANI vision.

The new highway link will start from the existing Pantai Dalam Toll Plaza and connect to Jalan Istana via Jalan Syed Putra, further strengthening the Pantai Dalam corridor network.

As part of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Master Plan 2040, the extension aims to ease heavy congestion along the Pantai Dalam–Bangsar–Mahameru corridor. The project is slated for full completion in 2029 and is expected to begin operations in 2030.

IJM Corporation’s group chief executive officer and managing director, Datuk Lee Chun Fai, said once operational, NPE 2 is projected to divert up to 40 per cent of traffic from Jalan Bangsar heading towards the city centre, improving the level of service from grade E/F to C/D.

“The most significant impact for users will be a travel time saving of up to 25 minutes for those travelling from Bangsar or Mid Valley towards Subang Jaya,” he said.

“By alleviating congestion along the Pantai Dalam–Bangsar–Jalan Syed Putra corridor and enhancing connectivity to Kuala Lumpur’s wider transport network, NPE 2 will provide faster and more reliable daily commutes for thousands of motorists,” he added.

Currently, around 200,000 vehicles use the existing NPE daily during peak hours. Upon completion, traffic congestion along the corridor is expected to drop significantly, reinforcing the highway’s role as one of Kuala Lumpur’s key urban connectors. — November 12, 2025
