There is a genuinely staggering amount of money just sitting around in Malaysia waiting for someone to claim it, and most people have no idea the system to check even exists.

As of January this year, the Accountant General's Department has recorded more than RM13 billion in unclaimed money, with roughly RM7 billion sitting in the Unclaimed Money Trust Account and the rest transferred to the Consolidated Revenue Account after going unclaimed for ten years. The good news is that money moved to the Consolidated Revenue Account is still fully payable if the rightful owner or their heirs eventually come forward with a claim, so nothing is technically lost forever.

This money comes from all kinds of sources most people forget about entirely, dormant bank accounts, insurance payouts that were approved but never collected, unclaimed dividends, matured fixed deposits, and forgotten EPF savings. EPF itself has been actively trying to track down members aged 100 and above who still have unclaimed savings sitting in their accounts, urging their heirs to check using an IC number or EPF number.

Checking is straightforward through the official eGUMIS portal, where you enter your identification details and the system shows any unclaimed money linked to your name. The Accountant General's Department has repeatedly warned that it has never appointed any agents or representatives to help claim money on someone's behalf for a fee, so anyone offering that kind of paid assistance should be treated as a red flag.

The process itself is not complicated once you know it exists. You register on the portal, search using your identification number, and if a match shows up, you submit supporting documents like a copy of your IC and a bank statement so the refund can be credited directly to your account. Processing typically takes around thirty working days once your documents are verified, and there is no fee at any stage of the official process, which is exactly why paid middlemen offering to speed things up should raise immediate suspicion.

The Unclaimed Moneys (Amendment) Bill was passed in parliament in 2024, updating how these funds are managed and moved between accounts, though the original owner or their heirs can still file a claim and get the money back even after it has been reclassified. The system is designed to eventually return the money to whoever it belongs to, provided someone actually comes forward and asks.

My Opinion

I genuinely think most Malaysians would be surprised if they actually checked this. We all assume unclaimed money is some rare, one-in-a-million thing, but RM13 billion spread across a population our size means a decent chunk of us probably have something sitting there, even if it is just a few hundred ringgit from an old account. Takes maybe ten minutes to check on the official portal. Cheaper than buying a lottery ticket and the odds are honestly better.
