RM2 million CBT: Sabah NGO boss arrested

Kota Kinabalu: The president of a Sabah-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly misappropriating RM2 million allocated for the construction of a cultural hall.

The male suspect, in his 60s, was arrested around 10am Tuesday after turning up to give his statement at the Sabah MACC office.

A source said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly committed the offence in 2022 by misappropriating funds obtained from the Finance Ministry for the construction of a cultural hall and gallery in the State.

“The suspect is believed to have applied for the allocation and carried out the construction of the hall on his own without obtaining the approval of the NGO’s supreme council members,” the source said.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest when contacted, saying the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for abuse of power.

He added that the suspect is expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court tomorrow (Thursday).
