RM29.7 million to plant pineapples with rubber

KENINGAU: The Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) received an allocation of RM29.7 million from the Federation to implement the Poverty Eradication Programme through the MD2 Pineapple Cluster Plantation.

LIGS Chairman Datuk Edward Linggu said the allocation will be used to develop 500 acres in Gana, Kota Marudu Agropolitan Project of MD2 Pineapple Cluster Plantation which involved 450 participants in the B40 group.

“For rubber smallholder, the same project aims to create rural entrepreneurs for the downstream industry in diversifying sources of income to face the uncertain rubber price situation,” he said. Some of the pineapple tendrils distributed by LIGS.

Linggu, who is also the Secretary General of the Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Sabah, said this on the MD2 Pineapple Tendrils Aid Distribution Ceremony at LIGS Pamalan Rubber Nursery.

“LIGS is committed to developing the MD2 pineapple industry in Sabah by planting 2.5 million tendrils by 2025,” he said.

Linggu said early participants in MD2 pineapple cultivation showed encouraging results by achieving incomes of RM3,000 to RM4,000 a season.
