Kota Kinabalu: Some 19,800 litres of smuggled alcoholic beverage valued at more than RM300,000 were confiscated at Sepanggar Port here.

The 2pm seizure last Friday was made possible through detection by the scanning machine.

Sabah Assistant Customs Director-General Mohd Nasir Deraman said following an inspection, a raiding team from the department’s Import Export Branch of Sepanggar Port and Enforcement Unit of Kota Kinabalu seized a container carrying the beverage.

He said it is suspected that the container was smuggled into the country through Sepanggar Port.

“The modus operandi, in this case, is making false declarations that the imported goods are other items, such as printing paper, racks, frames, chairs, clothes, playground equipment, lamps, LED, wardrobes, phone casings and mirrors,” he said in a press conference at CEA Port, Sepanggar, near here.

Mohd Nasir said further investigations are being conducted to identify individuals involved after it was revealed that the recipient’s address stated is fake.

The case is being investigated under Section 52 and 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967
