A major investment by Maxland Auto Sdn Bhd to establish a manufacturing and assembly plant for Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) in Sandakan is poised to transform the district into a green automotive hub, driving industrial growth and creating new job opportunities.
State Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (MIDE), Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, said the RM357.5 million project, which received its Manufacturing Licence (FML) in 2024, is expected to significantly boost local economic activity and support more balanced development across the region.
“The latest status of the investment indicates that the project is still in its early stages, with the company currently strengthening and finalising its business plan.
“In addition, the factory’s Concept Plan has been completed, while matters related to utility requirements, such as electricity and water supply, are expected to be finalised.
“My ministry, with the support of relevant agencies, will continue to play an active role in facilitating and coordinating the implementation of this investment to ensure a smooth realisation,” he told the Assembly.
According to Phoong, he and the relevant agencies visited the proposed site in February to gain first hand insight into the company’s investment plans and to discuss coordination measures needed to ensure its smooth execution.
“Based on discussions with the company, construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and is slated to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2028,” he said.
Phoong noted that the investment holds significant potential to positively impact the local economy in Sandakan, particularly through job creation and business opportunities for local communities — helping to raise living standards and reduce unemployment.
The project is also expected to spur the growth of local industries by strengthening the development of downstream sectors. It opens doors for engineering service providers, logistics operators, and automotive component suppliers to be directly involved in the investment’s supply chain.
“Indirectly, related support industries will also benefit, thereby strengthening the automotive industrial ecosystem and expanding economic opportunities at the local level.”
Phoong further highlighted that the investment could act as a springboard for attracting more green and sustainable technology-based investments in the future.
He stressed that initiatives such as this will enhance Sabah’s image as a sustainable and environmentally friendly investment destination, aligning with the state’s aspirations for a more sustainable and competitive industrial development landscape.
“My ministry remains committed to coordinating and facilitating this investment to ensure its successful implementation, while accelerating the growth of Sabah’s manufacturing sector and creating job opportunities for our people,” he said.
Phoong was responding to questions from Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie (DAP – Tanjong Papat) and Alias Sani (Warisan – Sekong) regarding the plant.
