KENINGAU: Tekun Nasional has channelled RM55 million to 1,108 entrepreneurs in Sabah this year while RM3.5 million was channelled to 237 entrepreneurs in the Keningau parliamentary constituency for the same period, said the Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development, Datuk Ewon Benedick here.

He said that until July 31 this year, Tekun Nasional had held 1,059 series of Entrepreneurship Basic Seminars nationwide with a total of 315,184 entrepreneurs participating in this programme.

“Since its establishment in 1998, Tekun Nasional, has channelled RM1.2 billion to 66,350 Sabah entrepreneurs while RM52 million was channelled to 2,821 Tekun Nasional entrepreneurs for the Keningau Parliament for the same period,” he said when officiating the Keningau Entrepreneurship Basic Seminar at the Juta Hotel here on Thursday.

According to him, entrepreneurship is the mainstay of the country’s economic development. At the national level, it can be seen how the entrepreneurship sector has had a major impact on economic growth, job creation, and improving the people’s living standards.

However, he said, to succeed in the field of entrepreneurship, not everyone has the knowledge and skills needed, especially at the initial stage.

Therefore, he said this seminar is here to provide guidance, knowledge, and a support network to those interested in becoming successful entrepreneurs.

“The majority of Tekun entrepreneurs present today are micro entrepreneurs and the rest are informal entrepreneurs.

“The contribution of entrepreneurs in driving the country’s economic growth is very meaningful,” he said.

Ewon said, the government is always committed to ensuring that entrepreneurs in Malaysia, especially Sabah, are given adequate support to develop their businesses.

He also praised the efforts of Tekun Nasional, which always provides platforms and financing facilities to assist micro and small entrepreneurs, including through easy and affordable loans.

According to him, this seminars are very important because they provide the knowledge and skills needed to enable entrepreneurs to grow successfully.

“We at the Ministry of Enterprise and Cooperative Development and Tekun Nasional will continue to strive to help empower entrepreneurs, especially in Sabah, so that they can take advantage of the opportunities available in the market.

“Tekun Nasional also provides various financing programmes to micro entrepreneurs to expand existing businesses and subsequently contribute to the country’s economic growth,” he said.

Ewon said that, the participation of entrepreneurs has contributed significantly to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (PMKS) which represent 96.9pc of the total registered companies in this country, of which 69.7pc are micro enterprises.

“This is proven through the contribution of SMEs to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2023 amounting to RM613.1 billion or 39.1 percent and employment of 7.86 million workers or 48.5 percent.

“This achievement of SMEs is a manifestation of the contribution of SMEs as a driver of the country’s economic growth. Like developed countries such as Japan, South Korea and Germany, the contribution of SMEs is more than 50pc to the country’s GDP,” he said.

In this regard, he said the Madani Government’s commitment is to stimulate more participation of SMEs in the viable and sustainable entrepreneurial sector through various efforts such as financing funds and capacity development.

Ewon said this is to ensure that the contribution of SMEs to GDP can be improved as outlined in the National Entrepreneurship Policy 2030 (DKN2030), which is an increase of 50pc by 2030.

“Today, I was informed that Tekun has invited 500 entrepreneurs for the Entrepreneurship Basics Seminar programme and hope that the success of these entrepreneurs will be a source of inspiration for other entrepreneurs out there to continue to create more success,” he said.

He was also proud and grateful for the efforts that have been implemented by Tekun Nasional in developing entrepreneurs over the years.

This achievement proves that Tekun Nasional is very relevant and has become a choice for accessing financing among informal and micro entrepreneurs in this country.

He hoped that all entrepreneurs who participated in the seminar today can play an important role in driving economic growth and national development.

“I hope that this Seminar will be of great benefit to all and can spark the spirit of entrepreneurship among all of us and be a starting point for more successful entrepreneurs in the Keningau district and subsequently at the national level.

Ewon added that this seminar will be a platform to generate inspiration and transformation for all, strengthening entrepreneurial efforts in a beloved Sabah.

At the event, Ewon presented Mock Cheques worth RM3.54 million to 234 entrepreneurs for the period from January to June this year.
