
TAWAU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized 3 tonnes of rice and 3.5 tonnes of sugar from a local cargo boat along Sungai Melayu, Sebatik Island, Saturday.
Tawau Maritime Zone Director Capt Shahrizan Raman said the boat was detained at 5.30pm on suspicion of carrying controlled goods beyond the permitted limit.
Two local men, namely the boat's skipper and crew, were also arrested in the operation.
"They were found to be carrying 3 tonnes of rice and 3.5 tonnes of sugar with an estimated value of RM60,000. The boat captain also failed to produce the boat licence," he said in a statement, Sunday.
