SANDAKAN: The Federal Works Ministry has allocated RM7.71 million for routine maintenance purposes in Sandakan from 2023 to 2025.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this includes maintenance work on road pavements, grass cutting, shoulder maintenance and road furniture maintenance.
“In addition, it includes bridge and culvert maintenance as well as drain maintenance carried out by concession companies based on the established scope of work.
“During that period, the government has also allocated RM53.149 million for periodic road pavement work, involving 25 projects, RM6.6 million for periodic non-pavement work, involving 12 projects, RM1.109 million for electrical work, involving six projects and RM8.78 million for slopes, involving three projects,” he said.
He said this during the parliamentary session in response to a question from Sandakan Member of Parliament, Vivian Wong Shir Yee on Thursday.
Vivian had asked the Ministry to provide information on the budget and implementation of Federal road maintenance and street lighting that has been carried out in Sandakan to date.
Additionally, she asked about the specific schedule for street light maintenance in the Sandakan area.
Alexander said the Sandakan Public Works Department currently conducts street light maintenance every one to two months and these works are done at night.
“Based on inspections, Sabah Public Works Department has carried out repairs to street lights in that area in 2024 and has contacted the Sandakan Municipal Council to resolve the issue of tree branches blocking street lights,” he said.
In addition, appropriate signage facilities will also be installed in the area.
Vivian also request that the Ministry conduct road safety audit in the Batu 5 area, Jalan Utara Sandakan, as that area frequently experiences road accidents.
