Dining out often comes with the expectation of fair pricing, but one woman in Kuala Lumpur was left in shock when she discovered she had been charged RM7 for a simple glass of warm water at a restaurant.
Sharing her experience on Threads, the woman, @pinatzamree, posted a photo of her receipt after dining at a KL eatery. The bill showed she was charged RM85 for a plate of Malouba lamb rice, RM25 for a glass of watermelon juice, and RM7 for warm water.
She described the experience as “daylight robbery”, admitting that she had not asked about the price beforehand.

Many restaurants do charge a small fee for warm water, especially upscale or specialty establishments, but RM7 is well beyond what most diners would expect to pay. While bottled or filtered water often comes with a price tag, warm tap water is typically either free or available for a nominal charge.
The incident has reignited discussions on restaurant pricing transparency. Some diners argue that restaurants should be upfront about charges for basic items, while others emphasize that customers should always check the prices before placing an order.
There is also the question of whether such pricing practices are fair. Some believe that charging high prices for something as basic as warm water is excessive and could be reported to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDNKK) for review. Overcharging for essential items without clear justification could be considered a consumer rights issue.

This case serves as a reminder for diners to be mindful of pricing, even for seemingly insignificant items. To avoid surprises when the bill arrives, it’s always best to ask about charges in advance, ensuring a hassle-free dining experience.
