The Road Safety Council calls for special courts to fast-track road accident cases, aiming to deliver swift justice, timely compensation and act as a deterrent.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Safety Council has urged the government and judiciary to establish Special Road Accident Courts nationwide.

Council member Lee Lam Thye said dedicated courts would expedite cases involving fatalities and serious injuries.

He noted that such cases often take years to conclude due to court congestion and procedural delays.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Lee said in a statement.

He emphasised that prolonged legal processes deny victims timely closure and fair compensation.

Specialised courts would allow judges to build expertise in handling technical evidence.

This includes accident reconstruction, medical reports and vehicle forensics.

Lee said this would result in more consistent and efficient rulings.

It would also help ease the backlog in existing courts.

“Faster prosecution and sentencing would serve as a strong deterrent against reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving,” he added.

He emphasised that swift justice would reinforce public confidence and promote safer road behaviour.

“Victims and their families should not have to wait years for justice,” Lee said.

He concluded that swift justice strengthens accountability and makes roads safer for everyone.
