Born in New York in 1943 to Virginia Admiral, a painter, and Robert De Niro Sr., an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor, Robert Anthony De Niro grew up in Greenwich Village. He was bitten by the acting bug at a very young age and dropped out of school at 16 to pursue his dreams.

De Niro sought formal acting training at the illustrious Stella Adler Conservatory. Stella Adler, one of the most influential acting teachers of the 20th century, hugely shaped De Niro as an actor. Under her guidance, he learned the art of method acting, a technique that became a hallmark of his iconic career.

His debut film The Wedding Party, helmed by Brian De Palma, arrived in 1969 and a year later, they collaborated on Hi, Mom. These were followed by titles like Born To Win (1971) and Mean Streets (1973).

In Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II (1974), he played a younger version of New York City’s mafia family patriarch Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando’s character in the prequel). Meanwhile, legendary actor Al Pacino portrayed his son Michael. It became a milestone film in De Niro’s career. Since then, he has appeared in several outstanding projects and collaborated with celebrated filmmakers, filling his acting career with cinematic gems.

Other notable films like The Deer Hunter (1978), Untouchables (1987), Awakenings (1990) and Cape Fear (1991), helped the actor create an irrefutable mark on American cinema, that is hard to replicate. While their earnings may not be as high as some of De Niro’s more recent works, they were commercial successes in their time. De Niro’s role in Raging Bull also won him the Best Actor Academy Award in 1981.

Such films and challenging acting roles not only made him a Hollywood veteran but also boosted Robert De Niro’s net worth immensely.

Meet the Fockers was one of his biggest commercial successes

The success of the Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro-led 2000 comedy, Meet the Parents, inspired two sequels — Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers, in 2004 and 2010, respectively.

Robert De Niro returned as ex-CIA agent Jack Byrnes in this hilarious sequel. Here, all hells break loose when the Byrnes family meets the Fockers for the first time and a cold rivalry between the two aged couples begins a laughter riot.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film made over USD 522 million worldwide and over USD 279 million in domestic theatres. The actor’s candid comedy encased within a stern exterior is an example of his acting prowess. While it may not be clear how much he earned from the film, considering the huge business it made, De Niro presumably took home a substantial slice of the pie that added to his net worth.

Shark Tale also boosted Robert De Niro’s net worth

Besides his on-camera roles, Robert De Niro wowed the audience as the voice of Don Lino in the animated film Shark Tale. He played the mob boss of the underwater reef. De Niro’s distinctive growling sound made Don Lino both a fearsome predator and a protective father figure who struggles to connect with his vegetarian son.

The animated film made a splash at the box office, raking in more than USD 374.6 million in revenue worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It is the third-highest-grossing movie featuring De Niro.

Other notable film credits that have boosted the net worth of Robert De Niro

Directed by Todd Phillips, the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer Joker (2019) became a blockbuster hit. The film showcases the journey of Arthur Fleck (played by Phoenix), a failed comedian shunned by society, into Gotham City’s clown-faced crime master, Joker, one of Batman’s arch-nemeses.

Robert De Niro plays the role of Murray Franklin, a late-night talk show host whose dismissive treatment of Arthur, unwittingly fuels Fleck’s descent into madness.

Box Office Mojo reports the film grossed USD 1.078 billion internationally, implying its financial success has added to Robert De Niro’s net worth as well. The Numbers ranks this film as the highest-grossing movie in De Niro’s career.

The title is followed by Meet The Parents grossing over USD 330 million, Little Fockers (2010) grossing USD 310 million and Silver Linings Playbook (2012) which earned over USD 236 million globally.

Other iconic roles include The Godfather Part II, which made over USD 47 million and for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor in Supporting Role in 1975. Then, there are The Irishman (2019) and The Intern (2015). More recently, Robert De Niro appeared in Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), where he played William King Hale, a convicted American crime boss involved in Osage Indian murders.

Robert De Niro’s business ventures

In addition to his prolific list of movies and acting roles, De Niro owns some very lucrative businesses and investments that further increase his net worth.

In 2021, he founded the Tribeca Film Festival along with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. It aims “to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center.” He also owns a film production company called TriBeCa Productions which was established in 1989.

The Oscar-winning actor has also dabbled in the restaurant business and opened Tribeca Grill in 1990. It is co-owned by famed restaurateur Drew Nieporent and provides a quintessential NYC dining experience, enhanced with a Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine list, and great people-watching.

His FandB business investment continued with Nobu Hotels which De Niro co-founded with world-renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa and film producer Meir Teper. The world-class hotel and the acclaimed Nobu restaurant chain are known for their pinnacle of Asian and Japanese flavours and redefine luxury at its finest.

De Niro also co-owns the Greenwich Hotel in New York, a luxe property with stunning views.

Hence, it is beyond doubt that beyond the film industry, the actor enjoys varied interests in the hospitality segment which adds to his net worth considerably.

Real estate and expensive assets

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Robert De Niro and his former wife Grace Hightower purchased a New York City apartment from Harvey Weinstein in 2006 for USD 20 million. The Central Park-facing co-op in the Brentmore, an Upper West Side building has previously housed Clive Davis and Sting. The 5,800-square-foot property comprised 11-foot ceilings and bay windows that frame the park canopy.

In 2016, Architectural Digest stated that De Niro owns a tranquil abode in the Greenwich Hotel, which he calls home. Created by Axel Vervoordt and Tatsuro Miki, it boasts a mesmerising view of Manhattan in full display.
