Roblox and UMI online games likely to be banned over youth safety concerns - Nancy

THE Government is reviewing the possibility of banning popular online games Roblox and UMI amid growing concerns over their influence on children and young people

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said today the matter is still under discussion and that any final decision would consider measures being planned by Australia, which intends to introduce new regulations for Roblox in December.

“We are still waiting and observing how Australia implements their regulations. They are planning, but it has not yet been enforced. Malaysia will assess whether the approach is suitable for our local context and culture,” she told reporters after attending a Training and Simulation Programme for Temporary Evacuation Centre Management on Saturday.

Her comments follow a recent incident in Kampung Parit Nipah, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, in which a six-year-old boy was seriously injured after being slashed by his nine-year-old brother with a sharp object.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the motive is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest the elder sibling may have attacked his brother after a Roblox game he was playing was interrupted and his accumulated points were lost.

Australia is currently considering restricting Roblox use for children under 16, citing concerns over the platform’s potential negative influence and its association with several internationally noted incidents.

Nancy emphasised that Malaysia will closely monitor developments in Australia before making any formal decisions. “It is true that technological developments can influence incidents like these. That is why we need to be cautious and learn from other countries before making a decision,” she said. - November 1, 2025
