KUALA LUMPUR – Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng is applying for a judge to allow him to serve his 10-year prison sentence at a low-security prison in Danbury, Connecticut.
His lawyer Marc Agnifilo wrote to US district judge Margo Brodie on the matter, saying Ng suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after he was in a Malaysian jail for six months awaiting his extradition to the US for his trial.
Bloomberg also reported Agnifilo’s request for Ng to be placed in a “lowest-possible designation” at the Danbury prison, which was said to be the inspiration for Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black television series.
This facility has seen its fair share of celebrity offenders, such as hotel magnate Leona Helmsley who was imprisoned for tax evasion in the early 1990s, reality TV star Teresa Giudice, and singer Lauryn Hill.
Apart from Ng, Ghislaine Maxwell also applied to serve her 20-year sentence for sex-trafficking in Danbury. However, she was sent to a prison in Florida.
Previously, it was reported that Ng said he could not pay US$35 million (RM156 million) in fines as the Malaysian government had taken “all of his money”.
Ng, 51, was found guilty in April last year of conspiring with fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho – better known as Jho Low – and Ng’s former boss at Goldman Sachs, Tim Leissner, to launder money from 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
