Bukit Aman advises the public and social media influencers against taking matters into their own hands regarding the Rohingya community and to report concerns to police.
BACHOK: Police have urged the public, including social media influencers, to refrain from taking matters into their own hands over issues involving the Rohingya community and instead refer such matters to the authorities for appropriate action.
Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the public should report any incidents or issues of concern to the relevant authorities, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Immigration Department, rather than acting based on emotion.
“We have laws and regulations in place. If everyone acts on their own, there could be negative implications because such actions may be driven by emotion.
“Any action taken by the authorities is based on existing laws and regulations,” he said during a press conference after a ceremony marking the completion of the 22nd SUKSIS Corps Inspector Training at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan here today.
Noor Hisam expressed concern that individuals, including social media influencers, could overstep legal boundaries when dealing with issues involving the community.
In this regard, he advised the public not to be influenced by provocations or negative messages circulating on social media concerning the Rohingya community, as they could potentially disrupt public order.
“Do not take matters into your own hands. Leave it to the authorities to take the appropriate action,” he said in response to the actions of several influencers who had entered Rohingya settlements to bring the community’s presence to the attention of the authorities.
Noor Hisam said the same principle applied to any allegations of criminal activity, regardless of a person’s ethnicity, race or whether they were a migrant or local citizen.
On claims that some individuals acted on their own due to alleged delays in official action, he said such reasons could not justify anyone breaking the law.
Meanwhile, Noor Hisam urged members of the public with information on the locations of Rohingya communities to channel it directly to the police rather than spread it in a manner that could provoke tension.
“It is better to report it to the police so that the necessary action can be taken in accordance with existing laws and regulations,” he said.
