Rohingya teen faces death penalty after being charged with newborn baby’s death

A 19-YEAR-OLD Rohingya woman faces the death penalty after she was charged at the Magistrate’s Court in Johor Bharu on Friday with causing the death of her newborn baby boy earlier this month.

Nor Aishahkila Hussein nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate A Shaarmini, but no plea was recorded.

The accused was charged with causing the death of the baby by allegedly throwing him from a hotel room window, causing him to fall into an alley below the building.

The offence was allegedly committed at a second-floor hotel room along Jalan Idaman 9/1, Business Precinct 8, Taman Nusa Idaman, at about 1.28am on July 5.

She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, with at least 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed, upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Shafeeqah Mohd Shariffudin, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

The court denied bail and ordered the accused, who holds a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card, to be remanded at Simpang Renggam Prison in Kluang pending the next mention of the case.

The court fixed Sept 18 for further mention. - July 17, 2026
