NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar on Tuesday demanded that the investigation into the death of Ajit Pawar be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), claiming that new details have disclosed a possible link to rape accused self-styled godman Ashok Kharat.

The MLA from Karjat-Jamkhed constituency in Ahilyanagar district said Kharat changed four mobile phones within six days. In one instance, he replaced a handset after making a call of only 19 minutes, Pawar said.

“Kharat received the highest number of calls on the day of Ajit Pawar’s accident,” he claimed, describing the development as “shocking”.

“The case of Ajit dada’s accident is extremely serious. Despite giving information to the CID, no action has been taken so far. Therefore, it is necessary to immediately transfer the investigation to the CBI. The government should act without further delay,” he said.

Pawar said any further delay by the state government would deepen suspicion surrounding the case and allow those involved to suppress evidence.
