Following talks between Haryana government authorities and the associations of municipal employees and fire workers, both unions have decided to suspend the strike till June 30.

The decision to suspend the strike was taken at a joint state-level conference of the Nagarpalika Karmchari Sangh, Haryana, and Agnishaman Vibhag Karmchari Union at Rohtak on Thursday.

“In public interest, it was decided to suspend the strike of both organisations till June 30," said Naresh Kumar Shastri, the state president of the Nagarpalika Karmchari Sangh, while talking to The Tribune.

He, however, cautioned the government that if the accepted demands are not implemented by the government’s deadline of June 30, then the employees of the municipal bodies, as well as the Fire Department, will restart the agitation from July 1.

Two rounds of meetings were held between the state government and the Municipal Employees Union under the chairmanship of Minister of Urban Local Bodies and Disaster Management Vipul Goyal in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

“The government made some concrete proposals to the union leaders to end the strike. To discuss these proposals, a state-level conference of the municipal and fire employees was held at Rohtak on Thursday, at which it was decided to postpone the strike until June 30," said Shastri.

Fire Brigade workers’ union president Rajendra Sind and general secretary Gulshan Bhardwaj said: “We have called off the strike in the public interest. Employees have little trust in the government as they have been betrayed many times before. If the government does not implement the demands agreed upon by June 30, the agitation will be re-launched on July 1.”
