The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology celebrated Fascination of Plants Day with enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of plant science in addressing major global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation. Fascination of Plants Day is an international initiative aimed at creating awareness among people about the crucial role of plants in sustaining life on earth and ensuring environmental balance. Scientists, scholars, students and dignitaries from nearby institutions participated in the programme organised on the campus of the institute.
Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, said that plants were essential for providing clean air, water, food, medicines and fibre, besides maintaining ecological stability. He informed the gathering about the ongoing research and conservation work being undertaken at the institute.
He said that the institute had been actively involved in surveying plant diversity in the Himalayan region, documenting their traditional uses, characterising important species and conserving valuable bioresources. He stressed the need for collective efforts to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable use of natural resources.
DK Upreti, former Acting Director of CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, delivered the keynote address. He focused on the relationship between people and plants with special emphasis on lichens. He explained that lichens served as important indicators of changing climate and environmental pollution and could help scientists assess ecological health.
He urged the audience to adopt environmentally sustainable lifestyles and contribute towards conservation of natural resources for future generations. As part of the Jigyasa programme, students and teachers from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Paprola, participated in the celebrations organised under the Mission Bioresource Conservation and Prospection.
