I’m sure nobody likes getting their hearts broken after ending things in a relationship. After investing all of your time and energy to build that foundation of love, commitment and trust with that special someone. Pre-break up, you must have imagined a beautiful lifetime together, hand-in-hand, side by side. Just you and him/her against the world. But alas, it was not meant to be. What a waste right? All those years you spent together. But eventually, you learn something from it and move on.
But what if you didn’t just break up? What if your budding, going-on-to steady romance tragically ends ie. someone dies. Now that would not only be heartbreaking for the romantic pair in question but it will be devastating to their loved ones and all who witness such misfortune. This is exactly what happened in the two Netflix movies that I’m about to share with you. So without further ado, get your tissues ready and let’s dive in!
Movie 1: Life in A Year
Genre: Drama, Romance
Year released: 2020
Starring: Jaden Smith, Cara Delevingne
This film tells the tale of a 17-year-old boy named Daryn. Daryn is a high achiever in everything. From being in the track team to scoring well in his studies, he thought he already had his life and pathway to success all figured out until he meets Isabelle, a wild, free-spirited blue-haired girl. He meets her while trying to sneak into a rapper’s concert with his friends and gets instantly attracted to her. Coincidentally, he bumps into her again in a cafe where she works and decides to ask her out despite her objection. After several dates, he falls for her but when he confesses his love to her, he finds out that she has cancer with only a year left to live. So he makes a plan to offer her a life’s worth of experiences in the final year she had left from graduating college to buying a house and getting their first pet.

Although the plot and storyline were quite typical, I personally enjoyed the movie. I liked the chemistry between the two main characters. I also love the message the movie is trying to convey, which is to live in the moment and cherish every minute of your life because you never know when the good times are going to end. I also like the movie’s message to follow your heart. Instead of being drowned in other people’s expectations, it’s important to know what you really want out of life. Isabelle encouraged Daryn to go after his dream and pursue his passion for rapping, which he did even after she died. On the heartbreak barometer, I give this movie a 6 out of 10. I did feel sad for Daryn towards the end of the movie when Isabelle died, but not to the point of crying. Anyway, it was a good attempt.
Movie 2: I Still Believe
Genre: Biography, Drama, Romance
Year released: 2020
Starring: KJ Apa, Britt Robertson
This film was inspired by the true story of Jeremy Camp, a Christian music singer-songwriter. At the young age of 20, Jeremy met and fell in love with Melissa, his first wife, who was soon diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Despite the diagnosis, the couple prayed to God and remained strong in faith. At one point, Melissa miraculously recovered from the disease when doctors found no trace of cancer cells in her body. Unfortunately, the cancer soon returned and became critical resulting in her eventual death. After her death, Jeremy’s faith was tested. He was angry with God and wanted to give up his musical career. Then, he finds a note left by Melissa in his guitar asking him to persevere and continue writing songs. So he goes on to write the song “I Still Believe”, which tells of his suffering and how he eventually restored his faith in God. The song touches the lives of so many people, including Adrienne, who then becomes Jeremy’s second wife.

This movie really touched my heart to the point of making me tear up. Maybe it’s because of how much I can resonate with it being a Christian myself. But I believe even if you’re not a Christian, as long as you believe in God, this show will definitely strike a chord with you. It was heartbreaking to see Jeremy suffer after his first wife Melissa’s passing. But the fact that he persevered and eventually regained his faith in God touched me. Besides that, I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters. The plot and storyline also kept me entertained throughout. Overall, I give this movie an 8 out of 10 on the heartbreak barometer. Definitely, a must-watch if you’re looking for something romantic and inspiring to enjoy.
