Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has been sued by a wholesale jeweler from Lebanon who is seeking US$14.57 million (RM67.46 million) from her for breaching a contract involving 43 pieces of jewelry that were shipped to her five years ago.
Global Royalty Trading SAL, the plaintiff with its headquarters in Beirut, filed the lawsuit at the High Court in this city on March 29 through Messrs. David Gurupatham and Koay.
The only defendant in the lawsuit was the ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's spouse.
According to The Star, by stating that 44 pieces of jewelry, including diamond necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, and tiaras, sent to her by the company's agent were seized by Malaysian authorities for violations of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, Global Royalty claimed that Rosmah, 71, had lied in both her affidavit and her statement of defense.
The reason, according to the corporation, is that just one of the 44 pieces of jewelry was detained by the police, and the other 43 pieces were not in their care.
According to the claimant, Rosmah stated in the Letter of Undertaking she signed on May 22, 2018, that she had the jewelry in her possession before the Malaysian government seized it.
However, despite the company's efforts to recover all 44 pieces of jewelry, only one of them—the diamond and emerald bracelet—could be identified and reclaimed from the government, according to the statement.
Global Royalty added that it is the defendant's responsibility to look after and safeguard all the jewelry.
It further alleged that the defendant had duped the business by shifting responsibility to the Malaysian government when the jewelry had actually vanished.
Since the plaintiff has the right to seek damages, the defendant "must be held accountable to pay for the losses due to the missing of the 43 pieces of jewelry," the jeweler stated.
