KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has described his reappointment as “a great honour” following royal consent from His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.

Azam’s one-year term extension, from May 13, 2025, to May 12, 2026, was recently confirmed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who said the decision had received the consent of the King.

“This consent is a great honour to the Chief Commissioner and all MACC personnel,” Azam said in a statement issued on Monday.

He also thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim “for the trust and continuous support in carrying out this responsibility.”

“With full awareness of the trust and responsibility given, I will continue to lead MACC’s efforts to combat all forms of corruption, misappropriation and abuse of power to create a prosperous, just and stable Malaysia,” he said.

Azam added that the commission remains committed to improving the country’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score “so that Malaysia continues to be respected and trusted at the international level.”

However, his reappointment has not been welcomed by all quarters.

On Saturday, PKR vice-president hopeful Nurul Izzah Anwar voiced her disapproval, calling the extension an “unwelcome” decision.

In a post on X, she said, “This was an unwelcome extension. The party needs to stand for reforms – and we require the support of the rakyat and our members in order to do this.”

She warned that such extensions made it difficult to implement deep, meaningful changes within key national bodies, adding: “We ask brave and courageous civil servants and personalities to rise to the occasion.”

Nurul Izzah did not comment on Azam’s earlier renewals but her latest remarks come amid her preparations to contest for the PKR deputy presidency, where she is expected to challenge incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.

Azam, 62, was first appointed as MACC chief on March 9, 2020, following the resignation of Latheefa Koya. His appointment has since been extended on an annual basis, with his previous terms running from May 2023 to May 2024, and from May 2024 to May 2025. – May 12, 2025
