Royal Mint to release new Star Trek coins to celebrate show’s 60th anniversary

The Royal Mint is releasing a new range of commemorative coins to mark six decades of Star Trek on television screens.

Two distinct 50p designs have been unveiled, both of which feature vibrant colour.

According to the Mint, these coloured editions mirror the bright costumes worn in the series, reflecting major advances in colour television during the 1960s.

The initial design displays the Vulcan salute accompanied by the words: "Live long and prosper", and: "Star Trek 60," marking the landmark anniversary.

A second coin showcases four spacecraft spanning different eras of the franchise, alongside the words: "Star Trek 60".

Star Trek has one of the most dedicated collector communities in the world, Paramount said (The Royal Mint)

It follows on from the Mint’s release of two collectable “ice and fire” coins to mark 15 years of fantasy drama Game Of Thrones in July.

Tim Mulhall, head of fandom at The Royal Mint, said: “It’s a privilege for The Royal Mint to boldly go, celebrating 60 years of Star Trek with a keepsake that’s out of this world.

“Both collectable 50p coins are designed for fans who’ve grown up with the franchise and want a piece of that history to treasure.”

Ruth Henriquez, vice president of products and experiences, Paramount EMEA, said: “Star Trek has one of the most dedicated collector communities in the world, and these coins are a tribute to 60 years of the franchise.”

The coins can be bought from The Royal Mint from 9am on Thursday September 3, with prices starting from £19.95.

The coins can be bought together at the same time from September 3, with the Vulcan Salute coin available as an individual coin from September 3 and the second spacecraft coin available as an individual coin from November.

The Game of Thrones coins released over the summer were made in collaboration with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products.

The collection was built around the elemental duality that defines Game of Thrones – ice and fire.

A month earlier, the Mint released a 50p coin to celebrate 100 years of the Grand Prix in Britain.
