The Princess of Wales has made a surprise joint appearance with Prince William to meet the bereaved families of the Southport attacks today.

Marking their first joint engagement since Kate’s cancer treatment, the couple privately met the bereaved families in Merseyside.

The Princess is said to have attended because she wanted to show her “support, empathy and compassion to the local community”.

As well as meeting with the victim’s families, Kate spoke to first responders and the dance teacher who was present at the July attack.

Meanwhile, King Charles has issued a statement expressing his “greatest sadness” after the death of inspirational Holocaust survivor Lily Ebert.

She passed away peacefully at the age of 100 yesterday (10 October), having previously met the King in 2022 after he commissioned a portrait of her.

The monarch said: “It was with the greatest sadness that I heard this morning the news of Lily Ebert’s death.

“As a survivor of the unmentionable horrors of the Holocaust, I am so proud that she later found a home in Britain where she continued to tell the world of the horrendous atrocities she had witnessed.

“Her extraordinary resilience and courage [are] an example to us all, which will never be forgotten.”

Prince William has praised the emergency workers who attended the Southport stabbings and stressed the importance of them taking care of themselves.

The heir to the throne, 42, described them as “true professionals” and said they had endured a “bumpy few months”.

He said: “The first thing we thought about was actually how on earth you guys are going to handle having seen what you’ve seen.

“So please take your time, don’t rush back to work, do whatever you need to, talk about it, give your superiors a hard time if they are not letting you have that time to decompress because it’s so important you have those moments.”

The chief fire officer for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service has revealed that the Princess of Wales hugged the families bereaved by the Southport stabbings.

Phil Garrigan said he had a “really lovely fleeting conversation” with both Kate and William.

He added: “The Princess of Wales broke off and came back into the building to give a hug to the people who responded because she could see the emotion in them and could see it was difficult for them to relay their feelings and to say how impactful events have been.

“I think that just shows a really caring side and is very, very touching for them.”

It is believed that the visit was planned as a solo engagement for William, but Kate, who has recently finished chemotherapy, wanted to attend to show her support as well.

Queen Elizabeth II was not ‘a regular sailor’s wife’ in Malta

Wednesday 9 October 2024 21:00

Emma Guinness

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh today made a poignant visit to the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s former home in Malta.

Living there during the early days of their marriage, the couple were brought to the country by Prince Philip’s job in the Royal Navy.

However, today it was stressed that the queen was not “a regular sailor’s wife”.

Giancarlo Azzopardi, assistant curator at Heritage Malta, said this is a common “misconception”, explaining: “The princess was living here at a time when there was a question about whether or not independence was going to happen and the princess was at work putting on a public image for Britain, for post-war Britain.

“Despite the idea, the misconception, that she was here as a regular sailor’s wife, she was quite busy. Every single day she was at an event.”

Sarah, 64, was diagnosed with breast cancer, like Ms Dynevor, after a routine mammogram last year before being diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer just months later.

During the visit, Sarah, who is now in remission, spoke to staff and patients and stressed the importance of speaking openly about the illness.

She said: “I think a lot of people are frightened to talk. They’re frightened that they don’t know where to go or what to do.”

The duchess added: “What I noticed today was I had a few private conversations with patients and they couldn’t get over that I was here having had a mastectomy, and that I said, ‘I’ve had a mastectomy. Here I am’.

“One of them in particular said, ‘Oh, so it wasn’t as frightening as you being led to believe?’.

“And I said, ‘No, it’s OK, just get good lymph drainage in after the operation’.

“I think that’s crucial because it is nothing worse than that fear.

“I had that fear as soon as I was diagnosed, I had that fear of death. You think it’s a death sentence. It’s not.”

Prince William could be coming into conflict with Anne’s 'raison d’être’

Wednesday 9 October 2024 11:00

Emma Guinness

A royal commentator has speculated that Prince William’s vision for a radically slimmed-down monarchy could affect Princess Anne, widely believed to be the hardest-working royal.

Tom Skyes, royal editor at The Daily Beast, noted that the Princess Royal’s “raison d’être is zooming around the country, squeezing in 500-plus engagements a year.”

He explained: “William has made it very clear he doesn’t see that as the family’s role anymore, preferring a tiny number of limited, high-impact engagements and events to the paternalistic, seen-to-be-believed, helicopter-riding royal attitude of old.”

The princess carried out 172 engagements between January and April of this year – more than double the number of any other working royal.

Wednesday 9 October 2024 08:48

Emma Guinness

King Charles will not attend the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan next month after the government exercised “an abundance of caution” regarding his health, it has been reported.

This comes after it was claimed that the monarch will temporarily “pause” his cancer treatment during his nine-day tour of Australia and Samoa this month after getting the go-ahead from doctors.

The decision was also made in the interests of his schedule, The Mirror reports, with the event taking place from 11 to 22 November – two weeks after the king returns from his overseas tour this month.

A source said: “The king will not be going to COP. He has not been asked by the government to attend the event and he is also mindful of his own commitments following the upcoming autumn tour.”

Buckingham Palace has been approached for comment.

The monarch, who turns 76 next month, was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer earlier this year following a routine procedure to treat an enlarged prostate.

Wednesday 9 October 2024 05:00

Athena Stavrou

James Middleton has said that his older sister the Princess of Wales was an “exemplary” student in his new memoir, Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life.

The memoir, which recounts the 37-year-old’s struggles with his mental health, touches upon his radically different school experience.

He wrote: “Naturally, Catherine and Pippa, being exemplary students, managed to get through their entire school lives without a single demerit, but I amassed a handful of them every term.

“So while the female Middletons would be applauded for being helpful to teachers – opening doors and carrying books for them – I’d undo all their kind deeds by scampering along the corridor instead of walking because I was late for a lesson.”
