Prince Harry has laid bare the hurt and anger he still feels over the phone hacking scandal as he blamed the tabloid press for the ongoing rift in the royal family.

The Duke of Sussex has appeared in an explosive documentary charting the egregious and illegal methods some journalists used to gain access to the voicemail accounts of celebrities and public figures.

Breaking his silence on his successful court case against the tabloid press, he told ITV that his determination to fight had been a “central piece” in the rift between him and his family.

He said: “Yeah, that’s certainly a central piece to it. But, you know, that’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.

“I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family. “

He won his privacy case against Mirror Group newspapers last December after a High Court judge ruled his own phone had been hacked. The prince involved in legal cases against the Daily Mail and The Sun publishers.

Prince Harry blames phone hacking case for royal rift

Prince Harry has spoken out about how his decision to bring his privacy case against the tabloid press impacted the rift between himself and his family.

The duke won his privacy battle against Mirror Group newspapers in December 2023 as a judge ruled he had been the target of phone hacking.

Breaking his silence on the case, he told ITV in a new documentary that his determination to fight the tabloids had been a “central piece” in the rift between him and his family.

He said: “Yeah, that’s certainly a central piece to it. But, you know, that’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.

“I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family.”

King Charles to replace helicopters after £1m flight costs

16:29

Athena Stavrou

King Charles is set to replace his 15-year-old helicopters this year after the royal family spent over £1 million on journeys last year.

The family made over 170 journeys in the helicopters but the Sikorsky helicopters will soon be replaced with two new AgustaWestland AW139s.

A palace spokesperson said the family would be aiming to use the helicopters as much as possible to “sweat the asset”.

“Helicopters are a very important tool in our travel resources,” the official said. “They provide great flexibility. They enable His Majesty and members of the royal family to be to be seen throughout the length and breadth of the UK.

Monarchy’s income to rise by £45m due to Crown Estate profits

15:45

Athena Stavrou

The monarchy is to receive a boost of more than £45 million, with a 53% jump in its official annual income to more than £130 million.

Soaring profits from the Crown Estate to £1.1 billion mean the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant, which supports the official duties of the royal family, will increase from £86.3 million in 2024/2025 to £132 million in 2025/2026.

Officials said the increase will be used to help fund the final stages of the 10-year £369 million renovation of Buckingham Palace, keeping it on time and budget.

The boost will be reviewed through legislation in 2026/27 to keep funding of the royal family at a “more appropriate” level, a Palace spokesman said.

Solar panels installed at Windsor Castle

14:45

Athena Stavrou

Solar panels are one of the eco-friendly measures already in place at Windsor Castle, installed this year in replacement the old lead roof.

The work was part of £16.6m spent on property maintenance projects – which also saw the removal of asbestos from Buckingham Palace mews and structural repairs to the Salisbury Tower.

“Out went the leaking lead roof and in came the Castle’s first solar panels – just one of a number of environmental initiatives, driven by a determination to place sustainability at the heart of our operations and inspired by His Majesty’s leadership in this sphere,” Sir Michael Stevens, Keeper of the Privy Purse said.

Sir Michael also described the new developments as “small steps, but part of a much wider plan to make a significant impact on our carbon emissions in the years ahead”.

Palace gas lanterns repurposed to electric in green-drive

14:15

Athena Stavrou

On Buckingham Palace grounds, gas lantern are being repurposed with electrical fittings to “improve their energy efficiency while preserving their historic look and glow.”

The historic lanterns were switched off during the recent energy crisis as a cost-saving measure but while shift to electricity may be more eco-friendly, the palace’s electric bill continues to soar.

The 2024 royal electric bill sat at £2.2m, up from £1.3m in 2023. A palace spokesperson attributed this to a change in tariff made in October 2023.

Expenditure on gas however did decline, with £1.2m having been spent in 2024 compared to £1.4m the previous year.

Charles and Kate receive 27,000 get well soon cards

13:45

Athena Stavrou

King Charles and the Princess of Wales were sent a huge volume of get-well-soon cards after they were diagnosed with cancer, the palace has revealed.

It has been a difficult year for the royal family, with both Charles and Kate having to step back from public-facing duties as they continue treatment.

The pair supported each other through the difficult news but have also had plenty of support from outside palace walls, with the palace having received a staggering 27,000 written messages wishing them good health.

Charles was pictured reading some of the 27,000 cards in June and was reportedly “brought to tears” by the messages sent from across the country.

Many people were said to have written to tell him of their own experiences of the disease or offering advice. One person told him: “Chin up, chest out, remain positive and don’t let it get you down. Trust me, it works, but the main thing is family.”

In the annual Sovereign Grant report, released on Wednesday, the palace said support teams “adapted swiftly” to the changing health circumstances in ways which included dealing with far more mail.

Recap: BBC presenter responds to Meghan Markle’s ‘reality show’ claim

13:15

Athena Stavrou

The BBC presenter who interviewed Meghan and Harry upon their engagement has responded to claims that the sit down felt like a “orchestrated reality show”.

Mishal Husain was one of the unlikely figures caught in the crossfire of the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary series, in which Meghan made the comment.

The BBC host has now said she “didn’t know what to make” of the claim as she revealed the couple seemed certain of their future.

“When the Duchess of Sussex said that my engagement interview with her and Harry was an ‘orchestrated reality show’ I didn’t know what to make of it,” she wrote in the August issue of Saga magazine.

“They seemed to have thought through what their new lives would be like and what marriage would mean for her life in particular.”

She added: “There was nothing that pointed to what would happen. It was two people who were full of joy in each other and life.”

Royal travel costs soar by £300,000 despite fewer engagements, figures show

12:45

Athena Stavrou

Royal travel costs soared by hundreds of thousands of pounds last year despite fewer engagements due to the illness of the King and Princess of Wales, figures show.

The Sovereign Grant report revealed travel expenditure went up by £300,000 at a bill of £4.2m despite there being around 400 fewer visits and less foreign travel than the year before.

What were the most expensive royal trips in the last year?

12:15

Athena Stavrou

The royal family made few foreign trips in the year to March 2024, perhaps reflecting a need to stay closer to home during a period in which both the King and the Princess of Wales spent time in hospital for cancer treatment.

There are 27 separate journeys by royal family members listed in the official report for 2023/24 where travel costs were at least £17,000, only eight of which involved the King.

This includes the most expensive trip in the 12 months to March 2024, the five-day state visit by the King and Queen to Kenya in October and November 2023, which had travel costs totalling £166,557.

Frogmore Cottage remains empty a year after Harry and Meghan vacated it

11:45

Athena Stavrou

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s former home, Frogmore Cottage, remains empty more than a year after they officially vacated the property.

Palace officials at the annual Sovereign Grant briefing said there were no new tenants in the Grade II Crown Estate property in Windsor Home Park.

It has been said that Harry has stayed in a hotel on recent visits to the UK, rather than at a royal residence.

The Sussexes were asked to move any remaining possessions out of their UK home close to Windsor Castle in 2023, just weeks after the duke criticised his family in his controversial memoir Spare.

image is not available

A Palace official said: “During the year, Frogmore Cottage has remained empty.

“I don’t think, at this point, I would speculate on who will be the future occupants of the cottage.”

He added: “The Sovereign Grant has been fully reimbursed for the refurbishment costs of Frogmore cottage when it was initially provided to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and, therefore, there is no cost to the Sovereign Grant other than some routine maintenance, but it would be required for any of the buildings.”

Wind farms more than double Crown Estate profit to £1.1bn

11:15

Athena Stavrou

Profit from the royal family’s land and property holdings more than doubled to a record £1.1 billion last year, driven by a short-term boost from offshore wind farms.

The Crown Estate owns the vast majority of Britain’s seabed, stretching up to 12 nautical miles from the mainland, and leases part of it to wind farm operators.

The spike in profits was mainly down to option fees, payments made by companies to reserve a patch of the seabed to eventually build their wind turbines on.

The most recent round of offshore wind leasing saw the Crown Estate grant licences for three wind farms in the North Sea and three in the Irish Sea.

When the wind farms become operational, those fees are replaced by more regular, less lucrative payments to the Crown Estate, based on how much energy and revenue the turbines generate.

Chief executive Dan Labbad called the option fee uplift a “short-term positive impact” for this year and next, before a “normalisation” in profits in 2026 and beyond.

Mr Labbad added that the Crown Estate is preparing to lease more land for wind farms in the coming years, but that the fees will be less lucrative because of market changes.

The Crown Estate has just over 11 gigawatts of generating capacity across 36 offshore wind farms, but is preparing to add another 20 to 30 gigawatts by 2030, he said.

Kensington Palace has given an insight into the working world of Prince William, and his penchant for sending a barrage of WhatsApp messages, unlike his father the King, the 24th duke of Cornwall, who prefers the old-fashioned telephone as a means of communication.

Alastair Martin, the Duchy of Cornwall’s secretary and keeper of records, said: “Sustainability is a passion that they both share but there are some differences.

“His royal highness the 24th duke would telephone me. His royal highness the 25th Duke, will WhatsApp me.”

He added: “The day after her late majesty died, I rang Prince William to say ‘Welcome to your Duchy, Sir’.

“I obviously knew him, I’d been working with him for the previous eight years or ten years, to really explain to him what his future was during the time he was heir to the throne.

“And he said, ‘I’m going to give you my mobile telephone number – if you want me, just get me, just message me’.

“And that’s how he works and he is very involved. There will be weekends when my WhatsApp messages will be in double figures and I will be very responsive.

“If something has gone well or badly, I will want to tell my boss and he’ll be straight back.”

William’s annual private income comes to more than £23 million

10:15

Athena Stavrou

The Prince of Wales received an annual private income of more than £23 million last year, accounts have shown.

William, as heir to the throne, is entitled to the surplus profits of the Duchy of Cornwall estate, and received the full amount in 2023-24, his first full financial year as the Duke of Cornwall.

The money is used to fund the official, charitable and private lives of William, Kate and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Kensington Palace also announced a number of new patronages for William.

They include a switch in role for the passionate football fan from president of the Football Association to its patron – reflecting his seniority as Prince of Wales. The FA patronage was previously held by his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

Solar panel castles and biofuel Bentleys: King Charles’s royal palaces go green in his first year as monarch

09:17

Athena Stavrou

The royal estate is undergoing a climate-friendly makeover in the first full year of King Charles’ reign, according to a report which shows his efforts to reach net-zero targets within palace walls.

Known for his commitment to the environment, the King has pushed ahead with green measures including adding solar panels to the royal estate as well as converting his pair of Bentley’s to run on biofuel.

Energy efficient electric ‘gas’ lamps will also be installed, according to Wednesday’s annual Sovereign Grant report, which revealed that Charles and Camilla have overseen a three per cent decrease in natural gas and heating emissions in the last year as a result of the green initiatives.

Will Meghan join Harry in the UK for 2027 Invictus Games?

She was last seen publicly in the UK at the late Queen’s funeral in 2022.

However, the Games hold special memories for Harry and Meghan. They were first pictured in public together at Invictus in Toronto in 2017 as they watched the wheelchair tennis.

The former actress has been an avid supporter of the games and rarely misses events.

Invictus announcement comes at critical time for the games

Tuesday 23 July 2024 21:00

Athena Stavrou

The announcement that Prince Harry’s Invictus Games is returning to the UK in 2027 has come at a crucial time for the event.

The former chief executive of the games announced his departure recently after a decade at the helm and six games across three continents.

Dominic Reid, who has been credited with helping the foundation’s growth globally, said the organisation was a “great place” but now needed a “fresh look”.

“It’s without question the community that has been built,” he said. “It’s a fantastic closed community and it’s growing 40 per cent a year, which is phenomenal, internationally it’s grown to include friends and families and that’s a vitally important part as well.

“The community is what we have achieved. It has had a healing effect.”

Prince Harry said he was “immensely grateful” to his “friend” Mr Reid for transforming the Paralympic-style sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick military personnel and veterans from an ambitious idea into a global movement.

He praised his tireless efforts and spoke of the journey they shared together.

Perhaps the most controversial royal couple in living history, King Edward VIII and his wife Wallis Simpson were no strangers to the finer things in life.

So, one can only imagine the upset caused to the couple when just ten years later, so many of their precious jewels were ripped from them by thieves.

Prince Phillip named in historic sex-scandal document

Tuesday 23 July 2024 14:00

Prince Phillip has been named in top-secret FBI documents suggesting he could have been “involved” in the Profumo affair.

The historic sex scandal revealed that John Profumo, the then 46-year-old Secretary of State for War had an affair with 19-year-old model Christine Keeler in 1961.

The pair were introduced by osteopath Stephen Ward, whose friendship with Prince Phillip was featured in the Netflix series The Crown.

Decades after the scandal, the Mail on Sunday have obtained a cable sent from from the then-head of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover, sensationally suggesting the royal’s involvement.

A cable sent to the US embassy in London on June 20, 1963 reads: “Corbally also stated there was a rumour Prince Philip may have been involved with these two girls.”

Birmingham Invictus Games set to be ‘most cohesive ever'

Helen Helliwell, chief executive of Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, said the event would be “the most cohesive, sustainable event in Invictus Games history” with legacy programmes benefiting communities nationwide.

Three new sports – pickleball, laser run and esports – are expected to feature.

Pickleball – one of the new sports – combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis and is played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and with a slightly modified tennis net. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, over the net.

Laser run is a combined event, with competitors alternating between shooting a laser pistol and running.

International competitions of video gaming or esports – electronic sports – have been increasing in prominence. Gamers from across the world gathered in Saudi Arabia earlier this month to face each other in the first Esports World Cup.

Esports has featured at previous Invictus but only as a side event rather than in the main scheduled competition.

Harry and Meghan halt search for UK home

Tuesday 23 July 2024 12:13

Athena Stavrou

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly stopped looking for a home in the UK as security concerns grow for the couple.

Harry took legal action against the Home Office over the February 2020 decision that he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection when in the country.

The couple have reportedly halted their search for a part-time home near Windsor as it became clear the matter would not come to an end in the near future.

“Harry really does want to spend more time in the UK but doesn’t feel comfortable doing that until the security issues have been ironed out,” a source told The Express.

“He and Meghan planned on looking for a part-time home near Windsor this year and hoped that the appeals process would be heard before the end of July so that they could properly start their search. However, the court process seems to be taking its time,” the source added.

“Have I had to call the police over racist comments and threats to burn my house down? Absolutely,” he told Tatler.

“The publisher offered security for my parents because we’ve had a couple of unwanted visitors. I think the whole thing has spun out of control.”
