THE Road Transport Department (RTD) in Sarawak are deploying enforcement officers to crackdown on public bus drivers using mobile phones recklessly while driving.
Sarawak RTD director Norizan Jili said the department received public a number of complaints of such cases.
Speaking when launching the Ops Hari Raya safety campaign in Kuching, he said RTD enforcement officers are going undercover.
"We are sending our enforcement officers to go undercover. They will board public buses as plain clothe passengers. While on board, they are to detect reckless behavior of the drivers, especially those who uses mobile phones while driving.
"We had uncovered a handful of cases already of drivers blatantly using their mobile phones while speeding," he said.
Norizan said the RTD officers will work closely with National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) officers in checking public bus drivers.
Anti-drugs enforcement units will carry out on-the-spot checks on these drivers to ensure they are not on drugs, he explained.
The RTD will also be imposing a ban on certain types of heavy vehicles on public roads during the next few days in conjunction with the Raya festive season, he added. – March 28, 2025
