
KUALA LUMPUR – National security, judicial appointments, and the proposed vape ban were among the main issues deliberated at the 269th Conference of Rulers, held at Istana Negara today.
In a statement, Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, said the meeting was chaired by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
During the session, the Conference received updates on national security and defence from Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, respectively.
Discussions also centred on the appointments of senior judges across the judiciary, including nominations for the Federal Court, Court of Appeal, and High Courts, as well as top posts such as Chief Judges of Sabah and Sarawak, the President of the Court of Appeal, and the Chief Justice of Malaysia.
“The Conference also took note of a proposal to implement a full ban on the sale and use of vape or electronic cigarettes in the country,” Syed Danial said.
Also presented were legal viewpoints from the 126th and 127th meetings of the Muzakarah Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI), along with resolutions from a special session scheduled for 2025.
Further briefings were given on several other matters, including the registration of marriages involving refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia, and a Cabinet Paper concerning a unified policy for the management of seized and forfeited assets.
Among those in attendance were Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.
Also present were Tengku Mahkota of Kelantan Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra, Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim, and Tengku Arif Bendahara of Pahang Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri’ayatuddin Shah Ri'ayatuddin Shah.
Governors from Sarawak, Melaka, Sabah and Penang – Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Tun Dr Mohd Ali Rustam, Tun Musa Aman and Tun Ramli Ngah Talib – were also in attendance, along with chief ministers and menteris besar, including a representative from the Sarawak Premier’s Office.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim presided over the pre-council meeting yesterday, also held at Istana Negara.
The last Conference of Rulers was convened on February 5, chaired by the Sultan of Kedah. — July 16, 2025
