A devastating fire swept through Rumah Rebah, Nanga Tutus, displacing 31 individuals from seven families and leaving them homeless. The incident, which occurred yesterday, resulted in the complete destruction of their longhouse. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The Fire and Rescue Department Sibu chief, Andy Alie, revealed that the distress call was received at 8.56 am, prompting swift action from personnel at the Sungai Merah fire station. Despite their prompt response, the longhouse, spanning 130 feet by 60 feet, was already 90 percent destroyed upon their arrival. The fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen of one of the units ('bilik').

Efforts to bring the situation under control commenced immediately, and by 9.39 am, the fire was successfully contained. However, it took an additional two hours to fully extinguish the flames. The extensive damage makes it challenging to determine the total loss incurred by the affected families.

This unfortunate incident highlights the vulnerability of communities living in longhouses, where the close proximity of living spaces can lead to rapid and widespread destruction during fires. The aftermath leaves these families grappling with the loss of their homes and belongings.

In the wake of the disaster, local authorities and humanitarian organizations often play a crucial role in providing assistance to the affected families. Immediate needs, such as shelter, food, and clothing, become priorities to help them cope with the sudden displacement.

Communities affected by such incidents rely heavily on the support of the broader society, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and compassionate individuals. The journey to recovery involves not only rebuilding physical structures but also addressing the emotional and psychological toll on the victims.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures within residential communities, especially in areas where traditional longhouses are prevalent. It underscores the need for continuous awareness campaigns, community training, and infrastructure improvements to prevent and mitigate the impact of such disasters.

As the affected families begin the challenging process of rebuilding their lives, the broader community's support becomes instrumental in helping them regain a sense of normalcy. It is a collective responsibility to ensure that those impacted by such calamities receive the assistance and resources necessary to rebuild and move forward.
