The consultation phase regarding the proposed amendment of the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 (RUU 355) is nearing its conclusion, with the forthcoming report set to be presented to the Cabinet before its expected introduction in Parliament later this year.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, the engagement sessions are being overseen by the Legal Division of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).

"All states, including state Islamic Religious Councils, state Syariah Courts, and state Islamic Religious Departments, were invited to partake in these engagement sessions," he stated.

Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar noted that, according to Jakim director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff, the engagement sessions are now in their final phase.

His remarks came during a press conference following the inauguration of the MAIWP 2024 Carnival by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier today.

Previously, media reports suggested that the bill's draft had been under scrutiny by the Attorney General’s Department. However, it failed to be tabled in time prior to the dissolution of Parliament on October 10, 2022. — Bernama
