KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has been granted an audience with the state’s ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today on whether to dissolve its assembly concurrently with Parliament.
According to a Sinar Harian report last night, the PKR vice-president is expected to advise the ruler to maintain the assembly, and said there is only a very minimal chance that Selangor will face an election soon.
“Whatever the decision, it will be decided after I give my briefing to His Majesty (October 11).
“If there are any changes, I will announce them later.
“As of now, there is a 98% chance that the state assembly will be maintained,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily after attending an event yesterday.
In a separate report by FMT, the menteri besar confirmed that there are no plans to dissolve the Selangor assembly.
Speaking to the press after the PKR’s central leadership council meeting, Amirudin said the state will abide by the decision made by Pakatan Harapan (PH) previously not to dissolve assemblies currently under the coalition’s rule.
Other than Selangor, Penang and Negri Sembilan are the two other states that are controlled by PH.
Amirudin’s remark comes following caretaker prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's announcement yesterday that Parliament will be dissolved with immediate effect to pave the way for the 15th general election.
By law, the election must now be held within 60 days, although it is widely expected that polling day will take place in early November to avoid the monsoon season.
In his national address, Ismail Sabri had also urged all state governments to follow in the footsteps of the federal government by dissolving their respective assemblies to save cost, apart from Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka and Johor, which held theirs recently. – The Vibes, October 11, 2022
