SEOUL: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol (pix) on Tuesday sent a telegram to Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressing his condolences over the recent series of strong earthquakes that hit the western part of Japan on New Year’s Day, Yonhap News Agency reported.
According to reports the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 hit Ishikawa prefecture which was followed by a series of aftershocks that have left at least 30 people killed.
Yoon’s message offered condolences to the victims and their families, and expressed solidarity with Japan in overcoming the damage, said his office.
He also offered South Korea’s help with recovery efforts and wished a speedy return to everyday life for residents of the affected areas.
A series of strong earthquakes, with major ones of up to a preliminary 7.6 magnitude, hit on Monday at a shallow depth on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture, according to international reports.
Since Monday, Japan has been hit by at least 155 quakes. -Bernama
