A discussion over a surprise performance at an MRT station in Kuala Lumpur unexpectedly turned into a heated Malaysia versus Singapore debate on Threads.
It began after a user shared a clip of British singer Rex Orange County apparently giving an impromptu performance at MRT Bukit Bintang, drawing a sizeable crowd at the station.
Another Threads user then praised Malaysia for having an MRT station that could accommodate buskers and spontaneous performances, while claiming that something similar would “never happen” on Singapore’s own MRT system.
Claims Malaysia copies Singapore
The discussion escalated after another user responded by accusing Malaysia of copying Singapore’s infrastructure and culture, while also allegedly claiming Indonesian food as its own.
Malaysia “have” this habit of copying Singapore’s infrastructure / culture + Indonesian food and calling it theirs,” the user wrote.
The post quickly gained attention, with screenshots showing hundreds of replies and more than 300,000 views on the thread.
The same user later compared Singapore and Malaysia to two different types of friends.
According to them, Singapore was like a friend whose achievements made people curious about how they became successful, while Malaysia was supposedly the friend who “keeps talking about himself even though you didn’t ask”.
In another post, the user also made sweeping remarks about Malaysian Malays, claiming that Malays in Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia behaved differently.
The remarks did not go down well with many Malaysian users.
M’sians start listing examples
Several Malaysians challenged the claim that Malaysia had copied Singapore’s infrastructure, with one asking when MRT systems had ever been exclusive to Singapore.
Others began listing Malaysian infrastructure projects such as the SMART Tunnel, Penang Bridge, Bakun Dam, KLCC and TRX, questioning how these could be considered copies of Singapore.
Another user sarcastically asked what exactly constituted “Singaporean culture”, before bringing up Singaporeans travelling into Malaysia for cheaper fuel and groceries.
Others joined in with jokes about Singaporeans shopping in Johor and Malaysians supposedly living “rent free” in the original poster’s mind.
One commenter simply asked:
“Since when tf are MRTs exclusive to Singapore?”
Food debate also enters the chat
The argument eventually moved beyond infrastructure.
Some Malaysian users responded to the accusation about Indonesian food by bringing up their own complaints about how certain Southeast Asian dishes and ingredients are labelled overseas.
One commenter joked about rambutan allegedly being marketed as “Singapore Lychee”, while another accused Singapore of renaming Malay food using terms such as “Peranakan”, “Nyonya” or “Nanyang”.
As expected, the thread soon became less about an MRT performance and more about the long-running online rivalry between neighbouring countries.
