S’wak needs more biochemistry experts: Abang Jo

KUCHING – Expertise in biochemistry is needed in Sarawak’s job market as the state is increasingly involved in petrochemical research and development, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said Sarawak currently needs about 1,200 engineers with qualifications in biochemistry to work at the methanol plant in Bintulu, which is located in the central part of the state.

He added that the need for professionals in this field would also increase with the construction of another gas plant being developed by Shell.

“Sarawak now has a methanol plant which requires expertise in the field of biochemistry and next we want to go to a higher level such as ammonia, fertilisers and so on which are related to biochemistry,” he told reporters after attending the 30th Kuching Sarawak Polytechnic convocation here today.

Speaking at the event, Abang Johari said he was proud of Kuching Polytechnic graduates’ marketability rate, which exceeded 96%, showing that graduates from small and medium enterprises are popular in the job market.

“This is indeed an achievement as all graduates are absorbed by the industry… that shows the standard of teaching in Kuching Polytechnic itself,” he said. – Bernama, September 13, 2022
