Kota Kinabalu: Sabah should serve as an example to the world in demonstrating how diversity can be a unifying strength, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said with 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture, language and customs, Sabah stands out as a beacon of multicultural harmony.

“The State Government remains committed to supporting people of all races and religions in celebrating their cultural traditions. This distinctiveness is what makes Sabah special,” he said at the launch of the 2025 Foochow Association Chinese New Year celebration, here, on Sunday.

His speech was delivered by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

Although the Chinese New Year celebrations have passed, Hajiji said the festival’s spirit remains.

“Chinese New Year is not just an annual event; it is an ongoing symbol of unity and harmony. This is the spirit we must uphold and take pride in, as it strengthens the foundation of our unity,” he said.

He also highlighted the Foochow Association’s crucial role in fostering harmony through cultural events and community projects, which help preserve heritage and bridge the gap between communities.

“Promoting the unity and culture of the Chinese community is essential, and I hope the Chinese community will continue to support each other,” he said.

Hajiji noted that 2025 marks the final phase of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 Development Plan (2021-2025).

“If given the mandate again, the Government will proceed with SMJ 2.0, spanning from 2026 to 2030.

“This aligns with our vision to drive Sabah forward, bringing greater development to the State and its people while fully realising the goals of the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan,” he said.
