OSAKA: The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) has renewed its commitment to mangrove conservation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) during Sabah Week at the Malaysian Pavilion, World Expo Osaka 2025.
Launched in 2011, the SFD–ISME Mangrove Rehabilitation Project covers 22 sites across 13 forestry districts and has restored 556 hectares of mangroves.
Entering its fourth phase (2024–2029), the project continues with annual support of ¥5.5 million from Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co. Ltd., Japan.
The initiative not only restores ecosystems but also advances mangrove research, cementing Sabah’s role in global conservation.
The MoU was signed by Chief Conservator Datuk Frederick Kugan and ISME Executive Director Prof. Shigeyuki Baba, witnessed by top Sabah officials and partners.
The SFD also showcased its conservation efforts at the Malaysia Pavilion’s Thematic Corner throughout Sabah Week, held from 25–31 August 2025.
