Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip) will serve as a catalyst for the growth of the energy sector, which is crucial for the continued economic expansion of Sabah.

He said Sogip has attracted numerous investments, including high-impact projects such as the Esteel Green Steel plant, which involves a phased investment worth RM20 billion.

AdvertisementMost recently, the RM8.88 billion (USD2 billion) Energy, Oil and Gas Hub Project — a collaboration between Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) which manages Sogip and Gibson Shipbrokers Limited which would further establish Sabah as a key energy hub in Southeast Asia.

“That is why the Government remains fully committed to supporting investments that can bring long-term benefits to the people of Sabah. “I am confident that it will act as a catalyst for the growth of the oil and gas industry, ultimately making Sabah a globally competitive energy hub. Hajiji Sabah has great potential in the oil and gas sector and the construction of the Petroleum Storage and Refining Plant owned by Petroventure Energy Sdn Bhd, which is expected to commence this April, would contribute to the State’s economic growth.

AdvertisementIt would involve the construction of an oil refinery with a processing capacity of up to 150,000 barrels per day (BPD) and oil storage facilities with a capacity of three million cubic metres for crude oil and refined petroleum products.

Spanning 400 acres at Sogip, this project is expected to attract foreign direct investments (FDIs) worth more than USD3.5 billion (RM15.5 billion) and create nearly 5,000 jobs for Sabahans.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});More than 3,000 workers would be required during the construction phase, while over 1,000 permanent staff would be needed once the plant is fully operational.

“I always emphasise the importance of prioritising Sabah workers in all projects and operations in the State. I want all industry players to adhere to this fundamental requirement as a key principle in our commitment to local development,” he said.

The project includes the development of a jetty, oil grading facilities, a petroleum testing laboratory and an administrative building.

Hajiji expressed confidence that the various environmental studies conducted by Petroventure Energy, such as the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), would ensure that the project is developed sustainably and in alignment with industry requirements and environmental priorities set by the State Government.
