Sabah Electricity bills rise 15–20pc amid higher usage and tariff adjustments

KOTA KINABALU: Electricity bills in Sabah have increased by 15 to 20 per cent over the past two months, mainly due to tariff adjustments, higher festive-season consumption, and prolonged hot weather, according to Sabah Electricity CEO Datuk Mohd Yaakob Mohd Jaafar.

He said the increase was largely driven by higher usage rather than billing errors, noting that consumption typically rises during Ramadan and Hari Raya due to extended usage hours and decorative lighting.

“Electricity usage increases without consumers realising it,” he said during the soft launch of the MySE+ mobile application in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday.

The new MySE+ app allows users to monitor electricity usage trends, track billing categories, and receive notifications on bill issuance, due dates, and overdue payments.

Mohd Yaakob also said Sabah Electricity is optimising power distribution between the east and west coasts to improve efficiency and manage rising operational costs amid higher global fuel prices.
