KOTA KINABALU: Sabah health officers have been busy with their clipboards and fines, racking up RM191,950 in compounds since the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 took effect last October.
The Health Department says 1,702 operations have been carried out across the state, with 5,567 notices issued to those caught bending the rules.
Of these, 932 cases involved action against minors, showing that cigarettes and vapes are still finding their way into young hands despite the ban.
Health Department director Dr William Gotulis (pic) highlighted the figures when launching Operasi Selamat Paru-Paru at Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens, noting that many remain slow to get the message.
The law now covers everything from advertising and sales to sponsorship and use, while firmly closing the door on under-18s lighting up.
