KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Health Department vehemently denies the recent allegations of newborn babies being snatched from their stateless mothers at health clinics or hospitals within the state. Dr. Asits Sanna, the director of the department, has refuted the claims, stating that there is no factual basis for such assertions, as reported by a news portal on September 15th. This news portal alleged that several incidents of such nature occurred at the Lahad Datu hospital.

According to the report, three cases of newborn abduction were documented, with two mothers ultimately regaining custody of their infants. Tragically, the report also mentioned the unfortunate demise of one mother who was facing the prospect of losing custody of her child.

In response to these allegations, Dr. Asits has initiated an immediate investigation into the matter, and the findings have indicated that there is no verifiable evidence to support the claims. Dr. Asits emphasized that all patients seeking assistance at government health facilities, regardless of their status, are treated with the utmost respect and in accordance with their constitutional rights.

In cases involving abandoned or neglected children, the hospital's protocol is to refer these cases to child protection services in compliance with the Children’s Act of 2001, ensuring that the welfare of the child remains paramount.

In a proactive step to address the situation, a police report was lodged at the Lahad Datu police station on September 16th to take appropriate action against the publication of the unsubstantiated report. Dr. Asits has reiterated the department's commitment to fully cooperate with any investigation that may arise from the report, demonstrating their dedication to protecting the rights and welfare of all clients.

Furthermore, the Sabah Health Department has pledged to conduct its own internal investigation into all claims, reports, and complaints in order to enhance and improve its services to the community. This proactive approach is aimed at ensuring that the healthcare system continues to provide the best possible care to its patients.

The Sabah Health Department has categorically denied the allegations of newborn abductions and is taking all necessary steps to address the situation, maintain public trust, and uphold the rights and welfare of all individuals who seek medical assistance within their facilities.
