Sabah, Johor floods: number of victims at relief centres falls to 1,935

KUALA LUMPUR – The number of flood victims in Sabah and Johor still sheltering at relief centres decreased to 1,935 people as of last night, according to their respective state disaster management committees (JPBN).

In Sabah, the state JPBN statement revealed that the number of flood victims last night at 12 relief centres still operating in three districts dropped sharply to 556 victims (from 165 families) compared to 1,641 (594 families) in the afternoon.

According to the JPBN, the headcount in Telupid district is 400 evacuees (113 families) at eight centres, Paitan with 111 people (40 families) at three centres, and 45 people (12 families) at one centre in Lahad Datu.

Meanwhile, all the flood victims in Pitas district were allowed to return home and the relief centres at Dewan Kg Kusilad and SK Pekan II were closed.

In Johor, the JPBN said flood victims in the state continued to decrease to 1,379 as of 8pm yesterday compared to 1,525 recorded at 4 pm.

It said a total of 17 relief centres were still operating in the Batu Pahat, Mersing, Kota Tinggi and Segamat districts, adding that Batu Pahat still had the highest number with 919 victims, followed by Kota Tinggi (223), Mersing (147) and Segamat (90). – Bernama, February 1, 2023
